We make men’s rings in three precious metals: gold, platinum and 925 sterling silver. Each has its own color, feel and care needs. Here is how they compare.
| Metal | Colors | How it wears |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Yellow, white, rose, two-tone | Shows fine marks; can be polished again |
| Platinum | Naturally white | Develops a soft satin patina; does not tarnish |
| 925 sterling silver | Bright white | Can tarnish; polish with a silver cloth |
What should I know about gold?
Karat measures how much pure gold is in the metal, out of 24 parts. Pure gold is too soft for a ring, so it is mixed with other metals that add strength and set the color: yellow, white or rose. Our gold rings are made in 14ct (14 karat), which is 58.3% gold, or 18ct (18 karat), which is 75% gold. Diamond and textured designs are offered in 18ct gold, 14ct gold or Platinum 950. Why choose platinum?
Our platinum rings are made in Platinum 950, which means 95% of the metal is platinum. It is naturally white, so it does not need rhodium plating to stay white and there is no coating to wear off. Over time a polished platinum band softens into a satin patina, which can be polished back to a shine. Browse Men’s Platinum Wedding Rings.
What is 925 sterling silver?
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver mixed with other metals for strength, which is why it is stamped 925. It is bright and takes a polish well, but it can tarnish, so a silver polishing cloth is worth keeping. Browse Men’s Silver Wedding Rings.
How do I care for my ring?
- Take it off for heavy impact work.
- Keep it away from harsh chemicals and chlorinated pools.
- Store it on its own so it does not rub against other pieces.
- Clean it with mild soapy water and a soft cloth.
